Pileated Woodpecker
return to "birds" thumbnails

Scroll down for other photos, including the pair. This is the type that Woody Woodpecker represented. When I lived in Bloomington, Indiana, a mated pair visited every year. One year they brought their two babies. They were cute. Nearly the same size as the parents, their crests had a more orange color and the black had a brownish cast. They were curious and awkward, often stepping on their own feet and tumbling over.

This (below) was greatly underexposed and shot through a dirty window, but I had to grab the photo before one of them flew off.
