The kevalinu were satamharanthu who left the Iron Autocracy after the Demon Wars that shattered the Dawn Continent (see the brief history), and took over the job of rebuilding the lands at Power's command. Gradually they came to ward the Cradle for themselves, separating from the satamharanthu and taking the kh'indaranya name "kevalinu," or "ones alone." However, they weren't so different from the satamharanthu that they could forgo political manuevering and wars of honor. As a result, directly before the Domination War there were only twelve surviving kevalinu, who form the Epiphanein. The Epiphanein was broken into factions - those loyal to their ancient oath (the Havrant - "Bound") and those who wished to remain independent (the Dhas - "Free"). The Havrant wore red robes to symbolize their blood-oath, while the Dhas wore white robes to symbolize their freedom. Tocair wore a black robe, and did not belong to either faction or act arrogantly toward other races; his only goal was to keep Samru safe from the avatarchs and inimical sojourners, due to an entirely un-kevalinu fondness he had developed for the young races. The Havrant tried to protect the Cognoterre, but they finally failed, and the wards around the Eavon Ocean fell.The satamharanthu were swiftest in ferreting out and destroying the kevalinu who opposed them.
