My Lady,
I am not sure how much your late husband disclosed to you about myself or my past, but in a recent discussion with Matteo it has come to my attention that such information may be important to the success of your current legal case÷at least in terms of preventing surprise, character assassinations, and so on.
Before I begin, I want you to know, and to sincerely believe, that I am not proud of my past. When I began working for your late husband, I divorced myself from a dark manner of living, and I have no intention of walking that path again. Your late husband saved me from myself, and gave me the hope, courage, and determination to begin my life afresh. He had faith in my effort, and I hope you will as well.
I was born in the Icewind Mountains to the Klesa clan. While fleeing the war-torn mountains, my parents were slain, and I was adopted by two humans from the small coastal village of Greytide. When I turned 18, I joined the crew of the Sea Specter, a local pirate ship. I was taken in and apprenticed to the drow navigator, Chorund Snow. Unfortunately, I was also taken in by the bottle.
I honestly remember little of the next 16 years; they remain a drunken haze of immorality. I do know that the Specter became extremely successful, that success founded on the darkest of acts. It was also during this time that I gained a reputation as the "Black Parrot." At the end of my sixteenth year with the Specter, Chorund was killed and I became chief navigator.
At the end of my twenty-eighth year with the Specter, I drunkenly plotted an attack on my home village. That experience, which I would rather not discuss, was enough to make me rethink my lifestyle.
I fled to Ankham, where I lived on the streets for several years, drunkenly pondering my despicable and damned soul. One evening, in the damp alley I called home, I saved a man's life. That man was your late husband.
I awoke in his care, badly injured in the battle. Over the course of several days, without knowing what kind of creature I had become, he nursed me back to health. I became charmed by his sterling character, faith in humanity, and optimism. He spoke often of you during this time. Let there be no doubt that he loved you dearly.
On speculation, he offered me a job as a privateer, and over the next two years he worked to turn me around. Pure philanthropy, and risk, as far as I could tell. But I did come around, at least relative to my pirating years.
It is not pretty, but that is the life I have lived. You deserve the truth, as much as it may hurt our relationship. I offer no excuses, only promises to help others when possible. I sincerely hope that you will not suffer from my acquaintance.
I have the honor to remain, my lady, your ladyship's obedient servant,
Korvallis Damion Sunspear
