Candor was founded in BD 180 as a human and aseku fishing village by the Eavon Ocean. It joined Darion SunBlazoned's growing empire in BD 2 and was made the seat of the Dominarchy in DR 0. Candor grew into a large city-state that dominated the empire for hundreds of years, until the Shattering Wars of DR 770-778, after which it began to decline in power. The Theophany of DR 901 succeeded in ending its reign, shifting the seat of political power to Cislunar. (See the Dominarch's Timeline for more details.)
Like most cities that have grown naturally, Candor consists of a variety of concentric walled circles, with a fortress in the center called the The Citadel, inside which towers the monumental Mynedd Palacesince the Theophany, a dangerous place indeed, with most of the magic that had helped it defy gravity and glitter with shatterproof Glassteel tiles and windows now dispelled. The rest of the city is divided into a series of districts, the Artist's Quarter, Etiolate, Umbral, Vermiel, Ormulu Vicinage, Oldgate and the Out (that area not confined by city walls but still considered part of the city territory). The Necropolis is referred to as if it were a district by natives but because nobody living dwells within it (Magicbane Minor's ghost, still active in city politics, notwithstanding), legally it is not so recorded.
Since the death of the dragon-imperate, who was brutally killed by a group of rebel mercenaries during the magically null period that immediately followed the Theophany, the city has become an anarchy. Several powers vie for the throne, including the conservative Grand Torturer of Matachin Tower, the liberal editor of the Candor Sun, and the people's favorite, ghost Magicbane Minor (it is said he is resisting these suggestions), while others fight for control of the streets (chief among these is the powerful Pandours thieves guild and the apparently immortal singers of the Wild Hunt. So far none have managed to secure enough power to be considered de facto ruler of the city.
