Physical Examination Results:
Despite unusual coloration (non-magical; apparently natural), subject is in extraordinarily good condition; has well-developed musculature and good coordination. Subject reports a lifetime of near-perfect health. Left arm shows signs of recent magical regeneration.
Personal History:
Born on plane of Vodren; lived with mother and grandfather in remote forest tower. Both were killed in an explosion when subject was 10. Subject was taken in by wild elves, lived with them for 30 years, learning magic and scouting skills. Subject wandered briefly, began adventuring at 42 with Draug Telperin, Joshua, Jade, Finobharr, Lance, and ("That bald-headed bitch") Domino. Claims to have spent much of that time as a talking raccoon. (Zone of Truth does not perceive any falsehood here) Acquired draconette familiar, Femir. Subject then reports having been killed by a magical staff, and then being thrown off of his home plane by an offended deity named Dharril, into a human body. (Again, the Zone has not detected any lies) Subject wandered for a unknown number of years on different planes, collecting magic and building up his reputation. Came to Glenzor at age 24, and has adventured for the last couple of years with his current companions (see Acquaintances). Volunteered for military, age 28.
Employment/Civil Record:
Subject brags of exemplary record as a mercenary adventurer. (Research shows current group does have a high success rate.) Subject is wanted for questioning regarding a riot that resulted in numerous magical casualties involving a winged-elf matching his unusual description. When asked about this, subject paled; claims he was acting under a magical compulsion at the time. (Zone did not dispute him, and was still functioning properly when tested) Subject offered to make amends to the families, and the matter has been turned back to proper authorities.
Delivery of information requested of the Gorgon Group was delayed due to "accidental" misfiling of his paperwork, but was "found" when made inquiries through higher channels. It was reported that subject has alienated entire guild secretarial staff ("Whats-her-name and the Grunt are probably still sore with me.") Reports show that subject has been making large-scale donations to the maintenance of an orphanage; subject would not comment on the matter.
Personal Goals: "Someday I will be the most powerful mage there is."
Hobbies: Spell research, clothes dyeing and design.
Phobias: "There is nothing that I fear." (Zone detects blatant untruth here, but subject refused to rescind the statement.)
Psychological History:
Subject was apparently born in an isolated wizard's tower deep within a forest on the plane of Vodren. The tower was protected by extensive magical defenses, but they were apparently penetrated by subject's father, an unknown grey elf who seduced subject's mother Crystal while she was walking in the woods. Subject has no other knowledge regarding circumstances of his birth.
Subject was raised by mother and grandfather. Although he claims his mother was attentive, questioning shows she cared for his physical needs and little more. Subject recalls mainly that she was very quiet, and generally only spoke when spoken to. He has only passing memories of his grandfather, and does not know what his name was. Recalls being intimidated by the grizzled old man who ordered his mother about as he worked in a laboratory filled with strange devices. Grandfather apparently only spoke to him to shout at him or order him around. ("Boy, fetch me this," or "Boy, stir that," or "Get out of my way boy!") In fact, subject can only recall being referred to as "Boy" during this time.
Ignored by the only other people in his world, subject apparently entertained himself in the woods or in the tower, developing an exceptionally astute imagination. Created an imaginary universe with himself at the center, and got from his nonexistent friends and servants the attention denied him by his family.
His grandfather apparently noticed his intelligence and began to teach him the basics of magic-use at age 7. Although this should have served to bond the two emotionally, subject reports that his grandfather was too obsessed with his own work to help subject with his. Lab was filled with sculptures and sketches of subject's mother; purpose unknown to subject. (Information supplied by the Gorgon Group supports conclusion that mother was most likely some form of simulacrum.)
At age 10, subject witnessed the deaths of grandfather and mother when a magical explosion collapsed the tower. His grandfather was killed by the explosion itself, while subject was struck unconscious by falling debris. Before being knocked out, subject clearly remembers seeing a section of the ceiling fall on his mother, and then imagining that she melted away like ice reverting to water before his very eyes.
Subject has little memory of following period; not unusual given the severe emotional trauma of the experience. What he can remember, it seems, is that he was rescued by the creatures his imagination had created, and that for a time he lived among them as their ruler. He was fed, bathed, clothed, and had his every wish seen to by his imaginary friends. It would appear that the subject experienced a period of extreme autism, during which his mind supplied him a world with which he was comfortable with to replace the one which he had lost.
Subject finally awoke to the real world to find himself living in a shelter in a tree, with a tribe of wild elves. They called him 'the Sindaraen' ("the grey elf"), the name which he has kept. Although he lived among them for 30 years, he was apparently never really accepted by them. They taught him the skills of living in the forest, but considered him both an outsider and something of a madman, and he was never allowed to participate fully in their society. He was forbidden to court their women, most of whom were uninterested. He was exiled from the tribe after a brief romantic encounter ("we were just kissing.") with a young wild-elven girl. Subject states that he is still a virgin; likely a direct result of conditioning from this period.
Subject left the encampment and wandered the woods (guided once again by the creations of his mind) for a couple of years until finally arriving in a predominantly human village, where he settled and began his adventuring career. Poorly socialized in his upbringing, her ran wild, exercising little to no self-control, taking no responsibility for his actions. Finally finding himself with an audience of adventuring companions, he worked overtime to gain the attention he had been starved for. Although he received mostly negative attention, and upset a number of his adventuring companions, subject found a kindred soul in Draug Telperin, a grey-elven worshipper of Erevan whose love of pranks matched subject's own.
While adventuring with Draug and the others, subject gained his familiar, Femir, and also became a subject of Dharril. a god of magic. Femir instantly became subject's best friend and prized possession. It was soon after that the god Dharril, however, became offended by subject's inappropriate attitude (subject would not discuss specifics), and disciplined subject by turning him into a raccoon. Subject rapidly adapted to this form, as his sense of reality was always a malleable thing anyhow, and he adventured as a raccoon for an extended period. While subject retained his half-elven mind, parts of the raccoon mentality remain with him still, as demonstrated by his obsessively good hygiene and his love of baubles. ("I never could resist a 'pretty-shiny.'")
Subject was killed by contact with a magical staff that he had been directly ordered by Dharril not to handle. Disgusted with him, Dharril banished subject and his familiar from Vodren, reincarnating him into a human form whose skin, hair and eyes were like those of the god's extinct followers. Subject reports being deposited onto a plane called "Nexus-World" by an unusual bird-like servant of the god.
Starting from scratch in a new body on a new world, subject recreated his psyche as well. Subject became both fiercely independent and possessed with delusions of grandeur. He convinced himself that he had been banished by Dharril because the god was intimidated by him. Subject's ego grew to immense levels at this time, and he added "the Great" to his name as he continued adventuring.
Apparently, subject's enormous confidence led other adventurers to believe in him, tolerating his massive ego and consistently appointing him leader of their expeditions -- a job which he took very seriously. Adventuring with strangers, subject formed no emotional attachments, considering the others as baggage with whom he had to share the spoils, and never saw any reason to risk his life for them. ("They were just a bunch of saps who didn't stand a chance without me.") Subject amassed treasure and magic on Nexus-World, but had no friends and made no home there. He eventually left, hopping from plane to plane as he got the opportunity, travelling wherever he could find adventure.
During this period subject encountered Lairunya Telperin (Draug's younger brother), and began travelling with him on a reasonably consistent basis. Lairunya was his first "real" friend aside from his familiar; subject has had difficulty in adjusting his selfish mentality to include watching out for Laurie as well as himself.
Subject recently arrived in Glenzor; began adventuring with Mikhael ap Arawn, Simon du Gar, Brandon Fuldor, Callous of the Death Moon Tribe, and Daniel Archibald. He has been adventuring consistently with the same group for a few years now (recently joined by Lairunya Telperin and Nicholas Gulceleb), and has grown emotionally during this period.
That he is making forward progress is indisputable, but an lf will show visible signs of aging before subject will mature completely. His companions report that the subject is motivated by "Cowardice, Greed and then Pride," in that order, but even they are forced to agree that he is making progress, albeit slowly. Subject reports being troubled for the first time in his life by what he believes to be a "conscience," and has been questioning his companions about the boundaries between good and evil. Despite this, they say he is still rather thoughtless and that he often acts without giving sufficient thought to consequences. ("Yeah, well it seemed like a good idea at the time.")
Examiner's Conclusions:
While it is not uncommon for adventurers to tread the fine line between madness and sanity, Sindaraen seems to step across it more often then most. As is common with those who have been rejected by their parents, he obviously suffers from feelings of anxiety, insecurity, low self-esteem (masquerading as total self-assurance), negativism, hostility, attention-seeking behavior, loneliness, and jealousy. This also explains his difficulty in giving and receiving affection.
His more unusual mannerisms and behaviors belie the ever-present threat of utter madness which lies within him. He is capable of extremes in mood, and as his baser instincts are not checked by his intellect, he has a tendency to do whatever occurs to him, regardless of consequences. As the madness is barely contained within him, there exists the possibility of a worsening of his condition in a stressful situation. While what it would take to return him to an autistic state is unknown, until his blurred and undifferentiated concept of self is repaired, his artificially constructed identity constantly runs the risk of unravelling at the seams.
Subject has a difficult time following others, and it is unlikely that he will follow orders well. This, however, I believe can be cured, and I feel that the subject may make an excellent soldier given some time and a healthy dose of military discipline. He is in better physical condition than most mages, and appears to be attempting to make a place for himself in Glenzor. Besides, with all his adventuring companions joining the military, it is doubtful he would tolerate being left behind, and would cause more mischief in the city limits than we have time to deal with.
Also, I believe that because of his lack of family ties of any sort, Sindaraen has placed his travelling companions in this role. Although he claims that he despises Mikhail, I suspect that there is far more to it than that. While there is a sense of competition between the two mages, both of whom are extremely proud, they continue to travel together even though they have fought on occasion. It is my opinion that Sindaraen only volunteered for the military because Mikhael did, and that he is hoping to find a way to win Mikhael's respect.
The subject claims to be interested only in securing a long-term place for himself in Glenzor. For this reason if no other, I feel that he will try to distinguish himself through his military service.
I consider this subject fit for military service.
Besides, we can always court-martial him later.
