Mikhael's House

The house is 18,100 square feet, dwarven-made of white marble, with doors of iron-banded oak that were crafted so tightly that they are Wraithform-sealed. All of the wood - doors, sills, and so on - has had "Ironwood" (OA lvl 5) cast on it. The main house is three stories tall, with a connected coach-house that is two stories tall and set off slightly from the house by a covered and cobbled "driveway" where horses can be harnessed and the coach can be kept ready when Mik expects to use it soon. Stairs from the street lead up to an open portico and the double front doors. On the third floor, overlooking the street, is an open balcony (see #36). [The house was built by Brandon's clan. Brandon was a dwarf the old Glenzor group rescued a long time ago, who lived with Mikhael for many years in his (smaller) houses until inheriting a kingship ("you mean, I've had a prince doing my housekeeping?") and buiding this house as a farewell present. The Scintillating Company later conquered Dragon Mountain (aka Retriever Mountain), cleared it out, and gave it to Brandon as a wedding present.]

In general, the house is magically unwarded; a few rooms are protected, but otherwise there are only normal locks on the doors and glass in the windows.

The servants have been given orders that Nicholai, Tatianna (Nic's ex-magic item, a pantherwere, and now Nic's fiance), Danny (Mikhael's husband), Callous (Mik & Danny's high priest) and Scorn (Callous' son, Mik's godson) have free run of the house; any of the three can enter without announcement and at least Danny and Nicholai have access to most of the Wizardlocked rooms. Servants have orders to give Scorn and Sindaraen a hard time about needing to present calling cards before being allowed into the house, however (after all, someone has to teach them good manners), although if they have calling cards, all is well. Other visitors are to be escorted to the sitting room and their presence is to be announced to Mik at once. Family members and family servants, of course, are permitted to go wherever they need to go. Messages and mail are left on one of the side tables for Mik to pick up at his leisure, unless the messenger claims it is urgent. The servants have orders not to endanger themselves if visitors or intruders seem belligerant, but to let them in and, if possible, alert the city guard that there may be trouble.

Mik has a giant jade spider that's been polymorphed into a cat (and typically cantripped green) as a pet - "Spider." He also now has two huge mastiffs that he, Danny, Angel, Nic, and Tatianna trained with that Mik uses as guard dogs ("release the hounds").

Current residents (as of year 3048) are: Mikhael; Danny (Mik's husband); Angel (Mikhael & Danny's child, via Wish—only acknowledged by the orcs as Mikhael's child since the marriage isn't legal in Glenzor); Jelenneth (a university student staying as a guest); Nicholai, Tatianna, and the servants.

MAIN HOUSE, FIRST FLOOR:

The east wing of this floor is the "servant's wing," where the servants live when they are not cleaning or serving (they may also visit in the coach-house). A small service door opens outside in the rear of the house, and is used by the servants to enter and exit. Mik never enters this wing if he can avoid it. The west wing is the "living wing," although Mik only uses a few rooms in it.

1) Kitchen

Large, well-appointed, with stairs in the southeast corner leading down to the basement larder (#42). A fireplace dominates the south wall. The servants take their meals here. [In fact, most of the cook's duties are involved with feeding the servants, since Mik hardly ever eats at home, and when he does, Nicholai usually cooks].

2) Servant's Washroom

Washroom for the servants, with well-closet that can be used to draw water up into the bath from the well in the basement (#44).

3) Cook's Room - a female half-orc, earns 30 gp/yr

4) Maid & Runner's Room - Maid is a female half-orc, earns 30 gp/year, runner is a female half-orc named Fayva from the thieve's guild.

5) Breakfast Room

This room has windows facing the street and a Wizardlocked glass-paned door facing the portico. It contains a small table and three chairs and is meant to be a friendly, intimate room used for breakfasts. [Mik loathes breakfast and seldom uses the room, although the rest of his household does]

6) Butler's Room

The butler's room is attached to the bellcord outside the house, so that anyone ringing the bell outside will be heard by the butler if he's in his room. The butler is a male orc, 3rd level, named Cagin ScabScraper of the Veinstripper clan, 29 hp, earns 300 gp/year.

7) Service Hall

This hall is used by the servants and opens onto a small stairwell (back of #8, #24, #35) going up and down the three floors. Servants are expected to use these stairs to move around the house, especially when guests are present.

8) Storage I - whatever. Mik doesn't look in here.

9) Storage II - whatever. Mik doesn't look in here.

10) Entrance Hall

This large entry hall faces a winding stairwell and is partitioned off from the rest of the house by doors to the east and west. Small tables flank the stairwell on the east and west with fresh flower arrangements, and on the east table a silver tray is used by the butler to take mail and calling cards. Guests without open invitations are ushered to the west and led to the sitting room to wait.

11) Dining Hall

This large dining room has a fireplace on the south wall. A door on the east wall opens onto a service hall through which servants bring food from the kitchen, and a door on the west wall leads into the smoking room for after-dinner conversation. The room is dominated by a large table with silver candlesticks, and eight chairs. [Mik uses this room much more now that he has a family, and he often invites guests to dinner with him. One of the house rules is that everybody dresses for dinner (either in a dinner jacket or formal kimono), and Mik does not bend on this rule.]

12) Sitting Room

This room contains a well-stocked wet bar with various glasses and mugs, a leather couch, marble-topped coffee table with ash tray and chess set, side tables with lamps, and two leather armchairs. The wet bar contains a small ice-box that the servants are in charge of keeping stocked with fresh ice and non-alchoholic drinks (like ice tea - for Danny) each day or two. Two tanned harpy hides are hung on the walls, and a stuffed hellhound body crouches by the door [where Mik entertains the faint hope that it might frighten a burglar]. Two Thionese hookahs sit in corners. The room is dominated by a pearl kuo-toa throne that Mikhael picked up from the City of Glass in the Underdark (Night Below).

A glass-paned, Disc. Wizardlocked (Mik, Nicholai, Danny) door on the east wall opens onto the portico, and an open entranceway on the west wall leads into the library (#14). In the southeast corner is a "hat rack" made of a wired-together doppleganger skeleton. [Mik usually lounges on the couch and reads when he gets a new journal or book; sometimes he plays chess with friends here, but is more likely to move the chess board into the library. This is the room in which he will chat with visitors who are not good enough friends to invite into the library]

13) Danny's Briefing Room

Once a smoking room, now converted to a military briefing room and filled with Daniel's possessions; maps, books, that sort of thing.

14) Library

This library opens off the sitting room (#12). A small door on the south wall leads to the narrow winding stairwell that goes down to Mik's lab (#46; servants may use this door to reach Mik's lab should they need him while he's there), and a fireplace opens on the north wall. The library itself is lined with shelves, with several chairs and a roll-top desk scattered around. Two comfortable leather armchairs face the fireplace. On the mantlepiece is Mik's collection of skulls: minotaur, coautl, fire giant, salamander, and hellhound. In the southwest corner is a silver-plated throne of skulls (the mind-flayer's), which still has some humanoid skulls missing before it will be complete. However, Simon (the company's fighter/thief) gave Mikhael his old enemy FluidStreamer's skull for a 35th birthday present ("just what I wanted!" [FluidStreamer had once had Danny flogged]), and Mikhael had it cleaned, plated, and added to his throne.

The books in the library are an eclectic collection picked up on Mik's travels and bought randomly in Glenzor and elsewhere. Besides the usual encyclopedias and mage's journals are cheap novels and the following titles:

101 Ways to Cheat at Cards
101 Ways to Have Fun with Magic Missiles
Books about troglodytes (eleven)
Books from a drow temple (thirteen)

Shadow Monster Types (three)

The Human Back (an assassin's manual)
Thri-kreen language books (from thri-kreen lair, Middenheim)
Types of Shades (thirteen books)

[Mik uses this room if someone whose company he enjoys comes to visit; it is more intimate and friendly than most of the other rooms in the house, and has the advantage of being set away from the halls where servants can overhear conversations.]

COACHHOUSE, MAIN FLOOR

The coach-house serves as home for the coachman and groom, who are responsible for its upkeep and the upkeep of the carriage and horses.

15) Coachhouse, Coach Atrium

15' tall, it contains Mik's coach, a small two-horse carriage of sedate black with no obvious sign of ownership on it. Harnesses, etc. are hung on the walls.

16) Coachhouse, Stairs

17) Coachhouse, Box Stall I

1 black gelding

18) Coachhouse, Box Stall II

1 black gelding

MAIN HOUSE, SECOND FLOOR

The second floor is meant primarily for entertainment, and is therefore usually empty. The servants are required to keep it dust-free despite this.

19) Billiards Room

Billiards tables, chairs, etc.

20) Men's Washroom

21) Ladies' Washroom

22) Upstairs Parlor

Chairs, couches, tables, etc - a place to rest and chat away from the ballroom.

23) Conservatory

Contains various musical instruments, scrolls of music, etc. [Mik can't use any of it - it's for guests' entertainment only]

24) Service Hall

25) Upstairs Hall A suit of +3 kuo-toa platemail armor stands against the north wall (Night Below).

26) Ballroom

This large room has a minstrel's gallery along the west wall, stairs leading up to it on the south wall. Two fireplaces open along the north wall to heat the room in the winter. A small door in the southeast corner leads to the service hall, for servants to use. Parquet floor, panelled walls, etc. Note that neither the south fireplace nor the small laboratory stairwell open into the ballroom. [At the moment this room is dominated by a huge behir skin, until Mik figures out what to do with it. He takes it out for parties.]

COACHHOUSE, SECOND FLOOR

27) Coachhouse, Washroom

28) Coachhouse, Groom's Room - Coachman is a male orc, who earns 30 gp/year; groom is also a male orc, earning 30 gp/yr.

29) Coachhouse, Coachman's Room

MAIN HOUSE, THIRD FLOOR

The third floor is the guest floor. The servants are required to air out the guest rooms regularly, but the beds are left without linen or blankets until Mik needs a room.

30) Guest Room I, East Wing This room currently belongs to Jelenneth (Night Below), a young country girl who Mikhael used his Dream spell on for several months in order to try to keep her sane before the group could rescue her from the aboleth of Great Shaboath. After being rescued, she was made sane again, reunited with her family, and offered a chance to study magic in the new University of Glenzor. While she studies she is living with Mikhael and Danny.

31) East Washroom

32) Guest Room II, East Wing - Nicholai's room. Heaven knows what he has in there besides his fiance, the pantherwere Tatianna. (Nic says he'll move out once he's married).

33) Guest Room III, East Wing

34) Guest Room IV, East Wing

35) Service Hall

36) Balcony, Outdoors

This balcony overlooks the street outside and covers the portico area. Double doors open from the upstairs hall, and smaller doors open from the east guest room IV and from Mik's study. All of these doors have Disc. Wizardlock (Mik, Nicholai, Danny) on them. Iron railings protect the open north face of the balcony. Nicholai has filled it with his plants.

37) Guest Room II, West Wing

38) Guest Room I, West Wing - Angel's room. Her nanny, an orcish woman named Envy, also stays here for now, caring for her. Misha, Mik's homonculous, often sleeps here, too, curled up with Angel.

39) West Washroom

Mik & Danny & Angel's bath. Like the other washroom on this floor, it contains a large, deep sunken bath, various shelves of linens & toiletries, a small stool, etc.

40) Mik & Danny's Study

Mik's study has a door on the east wall that opens out onto the balcony and is Disc. Wizardlocked (Mik, Nicholai, Danny), as are the other doors, including the one on the west wall that leads into his bedroom and all of the windows in this room. Servants are not allowed to enter this room or his bedroom. There is a fireplace on the north wall. The Throne of the Abyssal Winds (Night Below) dominates this room, and Mik enjoys lounging in it while he reads through his mail and so forth. Mik keeps his adventuring journals on the mantelpiece, along with an invitation to one of Zed's speeches, the invitation to Lord Zed's divine ascension and Chullin's coronation, and his deed of rank and to his island. There are the invitation to King Brandon's wedding and coronation, King Chullin's golden calling card, and the invitation to Lord Skineater's high council ascension party. Mik's rolltop desk has a black bone fire-giant skull beside it which he uses as an ashtray. On the desk is a jar with 5 acherai feathers, 5 roc feathers, 15 coautl feathers, 7 vrock feathers and 1 deva feather inside it. He uses a jointed agate snake (that can be "poisoned" so that the joints leak poison, a gift from Nicholai) as a paperweight and thinking toy. Inside the desk are his private papers and accounts, including his noble's pass, will, and his papers to the Vortex (now Clay Blade) and his own house. The desk also contains his military papers and various documents associated with the war. The desk also contains his private correspondance (including letters from Danny, Skineater, various nobles, and the Flintlock Brotherhood about his mother) and copies of Daniel's poems. His padded chair is covered with umber hulk hide, and a warg's skin sits in front of the fire. Some of Daniel's books and things are probably also scattered around in here. [Mik does his accounts and private work here; only his very trusted friends would be allowed into this room. This is where he usually reads and answers his mail].

41) Mik & Danny's Bedroom

A fireplace opens on the north wall and a small Disc. Wizardlocked (Mik, Nicholai, Danny) doorway on the south wall leads to the narrow staircase that winds down to the downstairs library and his laboratory. The window is covered with a +1 chainmail "curtain" versus wraithform that he picked up on an adventure, and uses when he keeps the window open on hot days. The bed is a king four-poster (usually unmade), with a night-table beside it containing an ashtray, candle and a case of cigarettes. A chair by the east wall is usually covered with old clothes and his smoking gown. There is a desk and chair by the northwest bank of windows. The only thing of particular note in his desk is a list of all the real names (Iron Cobra-usable) of his friends, enemies and associates. His wardrobe is on the west wall, filled with formal clothes. Half-read books usually litter the floor, and there are ashes around the nightstand where he missed the ashtray while smoking in bed. Danny's things can also be found around the room. All windows are Wizardlocked and Firetrapped.

MAIN HOUSE, BASEMENT

42) Basement, Larder

43) Basement, Wine Cellar

Also contains bottles of harder liquor, as well as some smuggled elven vintages.

44) Basement, Water Cellar

Contains a well and a variety of barrels filled with water. [that Mik keeps out of sheer paranoia, in case someone poisons the well.]

45) Basement, Laundry

46) Basement, Laboratory

Stairs lead down to a door, which is Disc. Wizardlocked (Mik, Nicholai, Danny) and a small room filled with boxes &c that are filled with extra reams of paper, ink, etc. Servants are expected to pound at the door, since they can't let themselves in. An illusionary wall stands on the east side. Through it is the rest of Mik's lab (which he shares with Nicholai - except when he's carrying out particularly disgusting necromantic experiments - and Danny). (Many of the spellbooks and dangerous materials the group took from Great Shaboath (Night Below) are kept on Mikhael's island, Ligunt, in a tower he's had built there that acts as a combination laboratory, beach cabana, and is threatened to become Angel's prison tower if she ever decides to become an adventurer.) The laboratory is large but filled with shelves, counters and tables. In one corner is a cot with pillow and blankets on which Mik (or whomever) sleeps when he cannot leave the lab. Besides the normal complement of wizardly and alchemical glassware and supplies, and a set of Mik's household spellbooks, the lab contains:

[Mik is often in the lab when he's working on new spells. Servants and friends can reach him via the stairwell in the library (#14). He doesn't mind people in the lab with him, as a rule, especially if he's busy and knows a visitor well enough to feel that he won't insult them by asking them to talk to him while he's working]
