[ADDENDUM: SUBJECT KILLED ON LAST MISSION; REVIVIFIED WITHIN A DAY.]
Personal History:
Born in Grey Elven city of Taraminas Sindamir ("or wherever the Telperins were 99 years ago"), the last of five children. Parents busy with "other high elven council muckety-mucks," mostly raised by siblings. Was originally left in care of oldest sister Fharrl, but was later tended by brother Draug and sister Feanole. Apprenticed at age 20 to illusionist Aemran Thorelinde; at age 27 to the master Bladesinger Dulinar (focused on rapier, but learned associated arts of dancing, juggling, tumbling, and blindfighting). Joined Draug and Fea in Glenzor and registered for citizenship in 2995 (age 52). Followed Draug off-plane in 3001; apparently began learning thieving skills from him. Eventually became separated; subject adventured alone over at least eight different planes, continued studies of magic and thievery. Met Sindaraen when about 90, adventured several years together. Followed Sindaraen back to Glenzor in 3041, renewed ties with Fea & husband Simon du Gare, joined Sindaraen and Simon's mercenary group. Volunteered for military in 3042.
Employment/Civil Record:
None to speak of at this point. No complaints or arrests. Has shown no ties with any elves of this plane other than his sister and those in his adventuring group. Knows nothing at all about his parents' current location or position in elven hierarchy; has not spoken to them in over forty years.
Subject's family life was highly unusual for elves; has left lasting impression on all behavior. Grey elven society is highly lawful, and they remain insular and isolated even from other elves, and even more so from human or orcish society. Subject's parents seem to have been especially formal ("the most dreary, insipid, tedious, prosaic, stuffy, pompous, dismally lifeless people you ever met"). Both were employed in central elven library as record-keepers and researchers; apparently provided reports to elven council on any subject requested. They "preferred books to children" but had five anyway -- extremely rare among elves. Subject speculates (probably facetiously) that mother was cursed by one of her tomes to continually do the one thing for which she was least suited.
Oldest siblings Fharrl and Draug were troublemakers from beginning, allowed to run wild and given almost no supervision. Fharrl started fights, wore outlandish clothing; Draug ran away overnight, sneaked into other families' homes, and left his mark everywhere he went. Kemen, apparently in reaction to chaotic siblings, became abnormally quiet and reclusive; left home early, became forest hermit (druid or ranger). Subject has almost no memory of him. Fea, largely raised by Fharrl and Draug, also showed wild streak, but it was tempered by basic elven love of beauty and song. Young Fea "was always more interested in magic and make-believe than in running around in the forest." F‘a involved infant Lairunya in many of her games, often dressed him up "like a big doll." Subject seems to have enjoyed the attention; continued love of fine clothing may be an attempt to recapture those times. When subject was four, eldest sister Fharrl responsible for serious accident ("she pushed me out of a tree"); Fea took over as primary caregiver.
Subject showed early aptitude for mischief; like all siblings' behavior, a transparent attempt to win attention from parents. Apparently unable to cope, parents tried to channel him into magic, hoping to keep him from running wild the way his siblings had; he rebelliously chose illusionry as most flexible art for prankery. Studied with high-ranked elven illusionist Aemran Thorelinde (female), but learned slowly -- apparently due to lack of concentration rather than low intelligence. Instruction was intermittent for several years; subject apparently only became serious about scholarship after he began sexual relationship with Aemran (unclear who initiated affair). Probable evidence of displaced desire for mother's love; was beginning of extended period of sexual experimentation.
Again parents tried to channel energies elsewhere; in 2976 they assigned him to learn swordplay from master Bladesinger Dulinar of Aspen Grove. Subject again lacked concentration at first; eventually tried to seduce master (again looking for love where only instruction was offered), was soundly beaten for it. Ran away from home for three weeks, but finally returned when no one came to look for him; subject's melancholy in describing this incident indicates a continuing deep need for sense of belonging and "neededness" that he never received in childhood. After subject's initial refusal, Dulinar convinced him to continue studies; subject considered him an enemy, and learned to fight well because of it. Over several years, came to respect Dulinar and finally to regard him as a surrogate father. Subject moved in with him in 2986 and lived with him (platonically) until he died in 2995. Subject would not discuss circumstances of his death.
Left forest, traveled to Glenzor to join siblings Draug and Fea. Lived a reckless and decadent lifestyle, freed at last from restraints of elven society. Began learning thievery from Draug in order to support self in style. Came to love inherent randomness and danger of Glenzor; indulged in a variety of games, drugs, and sexual activities. Probably in this period that pursuit of love & acceptance became sublimated to pursuit of pleasure. Is not inherently greedy, but avidly pursues wealth to provide himself with other pleasures. Also began cultivating androgynous look in this period, delighted by the confusion caused when people didn't know whether he was male or female. Continued romancing both genders, but more publicly now as part of this ongoing "game." This sort of mischief and improving illusionry skills were used as attention-getters. Subject became very good at making friends, attracting lovers, and avoiding friction, while at the same time using his laughter and flirtatiousness to keep the possibility of any serious relationship (serious risk of disappointment/rejection) at bay -- a classic insecure extrovert.
Subject eventually followed brother Draug off-plane; had one minor adventure together before they were separated. Traveled to several different planes over next 35 years; at least eight that he's sure of. Had numerous adventures, made numerous friends, but found nothing to anchor him anywhere; found adventuring the only way to avoid "constant boredom" (and the possibility of rejection), as well as maintain his luxurious lifestyle.
Encountered first lasting companion (cf. Sindaraen) at age 91; claims "life with Sind is never, ever dull." Sindaraen also appears to be first adventuring companion to repay friendship with loyalty -- something subject values highly but rarely receives due to apparent flightiness. Began demonstrating some leadership skills through their adventures together, usually "directing by indirection," making suggestions or nudging a group onto the right course.
Some indication that increasing sense of security has led to return to Glenzor after forty years. Subject exhibits a certain light-hearted smugness toward siblings in particular and other elves in general; seems to have come home to "show off" a little. Attitude seems to be "let's see who's laughing now." Indeed, he is something of an overachiever for so young an elf, and will likely continue to be so; the need to prove himself is now an inherent part of his nature.
Examiner's Conclusions:
Lairunya's profile is not unusual for an adventurer, although he is less disturbed than most. Despite an effeminate and delicate appearance, he is an accomplished mercenary, and although his demeanor is decidedly unmilitary, he should make an excellent soldier nonetheless. His sunny attitude and extroverted manners make him pleasant company, and the underlying need for attention and security can be exploited in many ways.
On the question of his loyalties, subject avows his loyalty to "myself, my friends, and my city -- the elves can all go take the long walk."
Note: Irreverent and flirtatious attitude is likely to interfere with regular military discipline in other units. I recommend subject be allowed to remain with current mercenary group; in addition to close friendship with Sindaraen and kinship with Simon du Gare, subject has also developed attachment to Lord Mikhael; exhibits deep respect for his magical prowess, honor and leadership. Continuing attempts to impress indicate he identifies Mikhael as a father figure; this can only lead to good discipline and motivation in the field.
I consider this subject fit for military service.
